The 2008 Mississippi Greenhouse Tomato Short Course

The action was non-stop at the Mississippi Greenhouse Tomato Short Course that was held last month near Jackson. In addition to the coverage in the April issue of American Vegetable Grower magazine, we have additional photos of highlights from the short course.

Sure To Grow is a new product line of plant growth media that is lightweight and sterile with great aeration and water retention. For more information, go to www.suretogrow.com.   Growers had ample time to check out the latest products from exhibitors at the Greenhouse Tomato Short Course.

Stan Roark from Alabama Cooperative Extension and Mary Peet from North Carolina State University discuss the benefits of grafting.   One highlight of the short course was a hands-on workshop that focused on grafting tomato plants. According to researchers, grafting will help increase resistance to soilborne disease.

Rick Snyder, the short course organizer, helps growers with the grafting process.   Grafting isn’t a difficult task, it just may be time-consuming the first few times growers try it.

Growers need to select rootstock seed based on potential problems, such as nematodes, Fusarium, and bacterial wilt.
